Taylor Swift has officially released The Tortured Poets Department, her highly anticipated 11th studio album.
The 34-year-old Bad Blood singer, who recently teased a ‘timetable’ for the album’s release, first announced it while attending the 2024 Grammys in February.
Fans speculated that the title of her latest work was a reference to her ex, Joe Alwyn. Swift also appeared to make a reference to the actor earlier this week when she shared lyrics from her album X.
The Tortured Poets Department has four versions, 16 songs, and a bonus track called The Manuscript.
Swift revealed hours before the album’s release that the lead single would be Fortnight, featuring rapper/singer Post Malone.
She also shared a moody teaser for the song’s music video, which will be released Friday at 8 p.m. EST.

The Tortured Poets Department has four versions, a total of 16 songs, and a bonus track titled The Manuscript.
Swift released a lengthy statement on Instagram as the album hit streaming platforms, describing it as ‘an anthology of new works that reflect events, opinions, and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time – one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure.’
She went on to say, “This period of the author’s life is now over, and the chapter is closed and boarded up.” After the wounds have healed, there is nothing to avenge or settle. And, upon further reflection, many of them turned out to be self-inflicted.
‘This writer believes that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. We can be free of our most painful memories once we’ve told them.
‘And then all that’s left behind is the tortured poetry,’ Swift concluded, announcing that ‘THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT is out now.’
She sent Swifties into a frenzy two months ago when she announced that a new album was on the way while onstage at the Grammys.
While accepting the award for Best Pop Vocal Album, the star said, “I want to thank the fans by telling you a secret that I have been keeping from you for the last two years: my brand-new album will be released on April 19th.”
‘It’s called The Tortured Poets Department. I’m going to go backstage and post the cover right now,’ she said excitedly.
Taylor shared a black and white album cover photo at the time, showing her laying in a bed while dressed in a black shirt and shorts. A stream of light could also be seen beaming down on her.
In the caption, she wrote, ‘All’s fair in love and poetry… THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT is a new album. “Out April 19,” followed by a white heart emoji.
Since then, she’s announced three new versions of The Tortured Poets Department: The Bolter, The Albatross, and The Black Dog. Each version, which can be pre-ordered by listeners, includes an exclusive track.

Swift did not confirm that Fortnight would be the album’s lead single until Thursday, when she shared the cover art on social media.
She appears to be institutionalized in the video, smashing a one-way mirror before being strapped into a bed and wearing an electric contraption on her head
‘At this hearing, I stand before my fellow members of The Tortured Poets Department and present a summary of my findings,’ she captioned the video on Instagram. ‘Album tonight,’ Swift explained. ‘Fortnight music video tomorrow at 8pm et.’
‘I’ve been such a huge fan of Post because of the writer he is, his musical experimentation, and the melodies he creates that just stick with you forever,’ she raved.
‘I got to see that magic come to life firsthand when we worked together on “Fortnight,”‘ Swift said.
Soon after, the Pennsylvania-born beauty teased the single’s black-and-white music video, which features Swift and collaborator Post Malone.

Fans were quickly convinced that the album title was a reference to her ex, Joe Alwyn, whom she dated for six years before their split was announced in April 2023.
In 2022, the British-born actor revealed that he was a member of The Tortured Man Club, a WhatsApp group chat hosted by close friends Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott.
