Selena Gomez is closing the theater as well as the red carpet at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
Numerous publications have stated that Selena Gomez and her Emilia Pérez cast mates have earned the greatest standing ovation at Cannes this year, which has naturally brought the actor and beauty mogul to tears.
Variety reports that Emilia Pérez, which also stars Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Édgar Ramírez, had the longest-standing ovation of the festival at its May 18, 2024, premiere, clocking in at nearly 11 minutes, according to Deadline.
Videos from the event that have been circulated on social media show Gomez looking obviously uncomfortable as the audience applauded the film, which finally brought her to tears. Gomez was not by herself, as festival attendees also recorded Saldaña shedding tears during the standing ovation.
Emilia Pérez, a Spanish-language crime musical drama co-written and directed by Jacques Audiard, tells the tale of a feared cartel commander who has gender-affirming surgery. Gomez plays Pérez’s estranged wife Jessi in the film; Only Murders in the Building is among her most recent acting credits. Gomez wrote on Instagram that “working on this film has completely changed my life” after the filming was over, going on to call her role “one of the most challenging things I’d done.”
